Asian tiger mosquito 'set for UK'
25 April 2012A mosquito that spreads tropical diseases including dengue fever may be poised to invade the UK because of climate change, experts have warned.
The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, has already been reported in France and Belgium and could be migrating north as winters become warmer and wetter.
Scientists urged "wide surveillance" for the biting insect across countries of central and northern Europe, including the UK.
The mosquito can carry dengue and chi...
Aspirin 'can cut cancer death risk'
25 April 2012Aspirin can reduce the chances of dying from bowel cancer by almost a third, research has shown.
Patients who took a daily dose of the painkiller for at least nine months after being diagnosed cut the likelihood of the disease killing them by 30%.
Taking aspirin for any length of time after diagnosis reduced the odds of dying from cancer by 23% compared with not taking aspirin at all. The study looked at 4,500 bowel cancer patients in the Netherlands diagnosed between 19...
Named and shamed for sweet displays
25 April 2012Asda, Morrisons and Iceland have been named as the "worst offenders" for undermining parents' efforts to feed their children healthily.
The Children's Food Campaign (CFC) said the three supermarkets displayed unhealthy food or drink at more than 80% of their checkouts. It also criticised the Co-operative, Sainsbury's Tesco and Waitrose for making families queue past displays of unhealthy snacks to reach the tills.
Not one "traditional format" supermarket in the survey ha...

Researchers at the York Health Economic Consortium, in partnership with charities Diabetes UK, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Sanofi Diabetes, also found that up to four-fift...
Doctors back heart procedure move
24 April 2012Doctors have welcomed the decision to make a heart valve procedure available to Scottish patients who are too high-risk for open-heart surgery.
The treatment has been on offer in the rest of the UK for several years, prompting cardiologists to urge the Scottish Government to introduce it north of the border.
Already around 100 people have been identified as being suitable for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), where a new valve is fed into the heart through ...
Reforms delayed amid disease doubts
24 April 2012Sufferers of industrial diseases will initially be exempt from the Government's reforms to no-win, no-fee legal claims, Justice Minister Jonathan Djanogly has said.
The minister said there would be a review of how the reforms work before a decision was taken on whether to make the sufferers of mesathelioma pay part of their compensation to their solicitors.
He said the Government was also looking at ways of making it easier for sufferers and their solicitors to trace the...
Pizza herb could help kill cancer
24 April 2012A pizza topping herb contains a compound that can kill prostate cancer, laboratory studies have shown.
Scientists tested carvacrol, a component of oregano, on lines of cancer cells. They found that the chemical induced apoptosis, or programmed "cell suicide".
Apoptosis is one of the ways the body rids itself of malfunctioning or malignant cells, such as those found in tumours.
The US researchers are trying to identify the signalling pathways that triggered the ...
